When it comes to heating your home, there are several options available, but we’re always surprised to hear that many homeowners have never heard of hydronic heating. Hydronic heating is an excellent option for homes in colder climates and for homeowners who find their forced air system doesn’t provide adequate home comfort. Here’s everything you need to know about hydronic heating!

How does it work?
Hydronic heating systems heat your home by running hot water through pipes that run under your floors and behind your walls. As the hot water passes through the pipes, it conducts and radiates heat to create an astonishingly even and comfortable warmth throughout your home. It is technically a boiler system, but unlike other systems that use radiators in each room, the mechanics of this system are completely hidden behind the walls and under the floor. This style of heating is an excellent choice if you’re choosing a heating system for your new home or looking to replace the system in your current home with something new and better. We’ve compiled a few of the benefits of hydronic heating to help you decide if it’s the right system for you.

Efficiency
Hydronic heating uses conduction and radiant heat instead of convection to heat your home, which means it heats up objects rather than the air. This style of heating is much more efficient and lasting, so in most cases, you can comfortably set your thermostat several degrees lower, which reduces energy consumption. For this reason and many more, hydronic systems can be up to 70% more efficient than other heating styles that depend on electricity and gas.

Durability
If you choose to install a cast-iron hydronic system in your home, you can get 25 years or more out of it, with occasional maintenance, before you run into issues. The reason they last so long is that cast-iron is extremely durable, and there are very few moving components inside the systems.

Quietness
Hydronic systems are known for being much quieter than forced air systems, which is one of the many reasons people choose to install them in their homes. Forced air systems rely on ductwork, which can make a lot of noise as it expands and contracts, and the blower that pushes the air can also start to make a lot of noise as it ages. Hydronic systems don’t use blowers or ductwork to heat your home, so they tend to make very little noise, which many homeowners find improves their overall home comfort.
